More Essential Landscaping Advice

Hello, and welcome back! Last month we wrote 4 landscaping tips for you to enjoy. This month we’re back with more practical, easy-to-follow pieces of garden advice. Have fun!

1. Resist Over-Using Curved Lines

Using curves in your landscapes can help make it look interesting, modern and expensive, but don’t go mad. Remember that, in landscaping as with so much else, useful is beautiful: overusing random blob-shaped flowerbeds or crazy golf inspired path lines will make your landscape look like it’s trying too hard. Long, elegant curves used sparingly is the right way to go.

2. Use Movement in Your Garden

Incorporating longer grasses as ornamentation is a great way to turn your landscape from a beautiful photograph into a gorgeous Hollywood movie. Plant flowers and berry-bearing bushes to attract butterflies, bumblebees and birds. Nothing completes a landscape like the presence of natural life. Making sure birds visit your landscape will make it feel like a full natural retreat, and not just a garden.

3. Make the Most of Your House’s Features

No architect is perfect, and nor is any building. Your house likely has a few beautiful design points; and also, a few features it might be best to hide. Use your landscape to accentuate what can be celebrated about your architecture, and to cover up any design flaws that may let it down. The best design will make these points look effortless – when in actual fact, it may take a professional’s eye to locate the best and worst features, and how to display/mask them.

4. Use Your Instincts

Don’t forget, it’s your landscape and your home or place of work. You’ll be using it every day, so if there’s something you’re truly set on, try to work with your landscape designer or architect to see how that feature can be sensibly and logically integrated.

Of course, the most important thing to bear in mind is the fact that good landscaping needn’t cost the Earth. The very best landscapes are often simple, easy to maintain, inexpensive, and made stunning by intelligent and inspired design.
